It's all about working out what to do, in what order and what you want where! I've never figured out how anyone knows where to put plug sockets before they've moved in, but that's just one small piece in an enormous jigsaw.
Having tradesmen you trust is paramount and when I visited our Arighi flooring team on site this week, I could see just how important it is to work with people who know what they're doing.
With flooring, the first thing you need to think about is how you're going to use the space. Do you want comfort and warmth, in a bedroom for instance, in which case carpet is probably your best option. Or are you looking for durability and something that's easy to maintain? Hard flooring like Karndean or Amtico luxury vinyl tiles are ideal for kitchens and hallways, as they're water resistant and can be mopped over quickly if you have muddy dogs or children!
The team take time to carefully prep the floor for the screed, ahead of the Amtico flooring being laid in the kitchen and hallway. Outside, the buckets are filled with water to make up the screed.
Communication is the key with any building project and our flooring team in store and on site keep the client updated at every stage. An initial schedule is agreed but flexibility is important - our team worked around other trades on this job for instance, suspending work on the hard floor downstairs so that furniture could be delivered and other works completed.
In the meantime, they set about laying the snow white carpet upstairs, removing their shoes and revealing several pairs of holey socks into the bargain!
It's a good idea to vacuum at least once a week, and to make sure you're using the correct settings on your machine. It's easy to mangle your carpet or create bald spots if you over-vacuum, so always check the instruction manual.
You might want to think about stain protection too, which works like an invisible film. Liquid sits on top of the pile, instead of being absorbed, and can be easily wiped away. Much more reliable than throwing white wine onto red or wasting a whole pot of rock salt!
The final results look stunning. Even at this early stage, before the house is complete and all the rooms have been dressed, you can see the impact the carpet makes. Perfect for bare feet big and small.
Downstairs, the Amtico is being laid and looks impressive. There are lots of different finishes and effects, so you can create any look you want, from rustic to industrial to minimalist.
The client in this instance is taking the flooring up onto the walls in the hallway, which will add fantastic depth and make a really interesting feature.
The beauty of any hard flooring is it looks great, is easy to clean and can be warmed up with rugs and throws, ideal if you have kids and animals that like to get messy! Sadly, they can't be thrown in the washing machine too, but at least your choice in floors will keep life simple.
