The Norwegian Design Secrets Transforming British Homes

There’s a quiet magic in the Norwegian home, and that’s why it’s been so inspiring exploring Norway as our latest Postcards From… destination.

Norwegian style isn’t loud, trend-led or self-conscious - it’s deeply human. Rooted in nature, shaped by light, and guided by authenticity, the Norwegian way of living is about finding beauty in balance. Homes here don’t perform; they breathe. They’re spaces that evolve with the seasons, honour craftsmanship, and prioritise calm over clutter.

As the pace of modern life accelerates, this grounded, nature-led approach feels like an antidote - and its influence is quietly redefining how we design, decorate and dwell.

Here are five guiding principles of Norwegian living that the world, and particularly the UK, is starting to embrace.

1. Friluftsliv - living with the outdoors, not apart from it

Friluftsliv, or “open-air living”, sits at the heart of Norwegian culture. It’s not just a pastime, it’s a philosophy - a belief that the outdoors restores and inspires. That spirit carries into the home through vast windows, unpainted timber, raw stone and organic forms that dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape. In Britain, where green space is precious, the idea has taken hold through biophilic design, wild planting, and interiors that breathe with the rhythms of nature.

2. Layered simplicity - minimalism, but warmer

Norwegian interiors are serene but never sterile. They’re defined by restraint, softened by texture such as linen, wool, ceramic, and pale woods that bring quiet character to every surface. It’s an aesthetic that values calm over perfection, and tactility over show. British design has followed suit, moving from clinical minimalism to something softer, more sensory - simplicity you can feel, not just see.

3. Light as a language

When you live half the year in darkness, light becomes everything. Norwegians design with illumination in mind - layering soft glows, candles, reflective surfaces and gentle colour palettes to capture every hint of daylight. There’s no harsh overhead glare here, only a choreography of warmth and shadow. The UK’s current obsession with light-maximising design - from skylights to mood lamps - owes much to this quiet mastery of luminosity.

4. Togetherness, with space to breathe

The two-duvet tradition tells you everything about Norwegian sensibility: connection with autonomy, intimacy without intrusion. Homes are arranged the same way; they’re sociable, but never overexposed. Open-plan living is softened with zoning, texture and intimate corners that invite stillness. It’s an approach that suits the modern British household perfectly, where home now doubles as office, sanctuary and gathering space all at once.

5. Ekte — authenticity as luxury

In Norway, ekte means “real”, and that’s the thread running through every design choice. Materials are honest, craft is celebrated, and nothing pretends to be what it isn’t. A table might be rough-hewn oak, a throw handwoven in wool from a local flock. It’s an aesthetic of integrity, not ornamentation. Increasingly, British homes are embracing this too - investing in fewer, better things, and rediscovering the quiet beauty of the handmade.

The Norwegian way isn’t about trend or performance. It’s a conversation between light, landscape and life itself - calm, functional, enduring.

It’s this timeless connection between nature, craft and calm living that makes Norway the perfect destination for our Postcards From… campaign. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing ideas for beautifully curated interiors, inspired styling, and exclusive pieces that capture the essence of ekte - the uniquely Norwegian sense of authenticity. It’s our invitation to slow down, live deliberately, and bring a little northern light into your own home.
