Create a Mindfulness Nook to Encourage Relaxation and Calm

We all need to give ourselves the gift of self-care amid the hustle and bustle of today’s fast-paced world - it’s essential for mental and emotional wellbeing. Yet finding the time and space can sometimes feel like a challenge in itself. Creating a dedicated place in your home for meditation and mindfulness, away from the constant drumbeat of to-do lists, notifications, and daily responsibilities, can make it easier to intentionally set aside those precious moments.

One of the best ways to foster mindfulness and cultivate inner peace is by creating a dedicated area at home, whether it’s a mindfulness nook to tap into your inner self, a cosy corner for reading or journalling, or a zen den for breathing exercises and simple yoga. This simple yet powerful addition to your living space can be your own retreat, a place to connect with yourself and recharge your batteries.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and can help us improve our mental wellbeing, become more self-aware, be kinder towards ourselves and others, and even sleep better. Practicing mindfulness could be something as simple as pausing to breathe before reacting to stimulus, taking a time out for a few minutes to read a book, or indulging in a favourite hobby.

Whilst it’s an innate human capability – we can all be mindful some of the time - mindfulness can be developed when we practice regularly.

Tips for creating a mindfulness nook

Choose the right space: It doesn’t have to be fancy! The key is finding a dedicated spot, preferably with natural light and minimal noise, where you feel comfortable and able retreat from the distractions of daily life. A window nook or cosy corner in your bedroom or living room with a snuggle seat or occasional chair that you can cocoon yourself in will work perfectly. Ask yourself how the space makes you feel and trust your intuition – if it’s peaceful and makes you feel relaxed, then it’s the right space for you.

Keep it simple and personal: A cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind, so clear away any unnecessary objects. The more simple it is, the easier it will be to focus; minimalism is key here. Illuminate your nook with an gorgeous lamp - our collection of Humble battery powered table lamps are not only dimmable but also portable, meaning you can position the light exactly where you need it. Make the space your own by furnishing with items that bring you inspiration or spiritual comfort such as cosy throws and pillows, a journal, or a favourite book or piece of art.  Aesthetically appealing coffee table books, increasingly viewed as accessories in their own right, can be full of inspiration. By making it uniquely yours, you’ll find it easier to zone out the world, reconnect with yourself, and enhance your mindfulness practice.

Harness the power of nature: It’s well known that nature has a soothing effect on body and mind, so introducing natural elements such as flowers or air-purifying houseplants can help foster a sense of connection and tranquillity. A window seat with a view of the sky and trees, for example, can reduce your stress levels and add an extra layer of mindfulness.

Make it an experience of the senses: It’s all about becoming more self-aware and being present in the moment, so incorporating elements that speak to all five senses can ultimately deepen your practice and help you feel more engaged.

  • Sight: Create a calming ambience with neutral colours and warm lighting – fairy lights and candles are a great way to add visual interest and cosiness.
  • Sound: Certain sounds – think waves breaking on a beach, forest music, or whale song – can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. If that doesn’t resonate with you, try playing your favourite soothing music or adding a windchime.
  • Smell: Aromatherapy is renowned for enhancing calm and reducing stress - when inhaled, the scent molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain. Try a diffuser or pulse point oil in lavender for relaxation, sandalwood for anxiety, clary sage for stress, chamomile for sleep, orange for meditation, or lemon for mood lifting.
  • Touch: Add calming tactility to your nook with plush cushions, a cosy blanket, a faux fur rug, and anything else you feel will make it comfortable and inviting.
  • Taste: If it’s your thing, sipping a warming herbal infusion or tea can be a mindfulness ritual in itself.

Set clear boundaries: Make friends and family in your household aware that the space you’ve created is your sanctuary for practicing self-care and mindfulness and that you’d rather not be disturbed while you’re there.

By taking the time to create your own mindfulness nook, you’re essentially giving yourself permission to slow down, breathe, and just ‘be’ in the present moment. Mindfulness is a journey rather than a destination, so try and get into the habit of practicing regularly, even if only for a few minutes, until it becomes second nature. Embrace the practice and your mind, body, and soul will thank you for it.
