Design That Knows You Back: The New Age of Smart Living
Sarah Bianchi from Arighi Bianchi explores how home design has evolved from “dumb” objects to smart living - and why the future of interior design lies in creating homes that feel intelligent, intuitive and deeply human. Once upon a time, the most intelligent thing in your living room was the person holding the remote. Your lamp switched on, your clock ticked, and that was that. Inspired by points made by a design leader during a recent Leading Design in Times of Change talk, I considered how this specifically relates to products and objects in our homes. It absolutely resonates. Like in other areas of design, our home objects have also gone through three clear eras: from “dumb” (1980–2005), to smart (2005–2015), and now to deeply connected — the 2015–2025 phase, where design doesn’t just react but anticipates.  It’s a journey that mirrors what we’re seeing every day at Arighi Bianchi: customers wanting homes that feel both more intelligent and more personal. From Dumb to Brilliant Back in the ’80s and ’90s, design was about craft, materials and permanence. We still value that today — those “dumb” objects remind us that good design starts with quality. But as our lives became more digital, our homes began to adapt. Smart lighting, connected speakers and intuitive heating systems entered our spaces quietly, bringing convenience and subtle control. At Arighi Bianchi, we’ve embraced this evolution by curating technology that fits beautifully within the home - not cold gadgets, but intelligent pieces that blend with timeless design. Think sleek wireless speakers that double as sculptural accents, or lighting that responds softly to mood and time of day. Smart Homes, Human Touch The modern home is shifting again. The focus is no longer on what your devices can do, but on how they make you feel. Design must now balance intelligence with warmth — seamless tech, natural textures, and pieces that enhance comfort rather than compete for attention. It’s why we champion “smart homes with soul”. Our philosophy is simple: innovation should elevate the beauty of everyday living, not dominate it. We look for objects that respond, adapt and simplify - all while maintaining that unmistakable sense of home. A Future That Feels Familiar Looking ahead, the smartest homes won’t be the most high-tech. They’ll be the most thoughtful. Furniture and accessories that age gracefully, adapt to new needs, and connect us in ways that feel natural. That’s the sweet spot we’re designing for - homes that are future-ready, yet still deeply human. Because at the end of the day, the best technology is the kind you barely notice… you just feel the difference.
